funds for the University, but in view of the

-principle of the scheme but to the elabora-

tion of its details.

3. I gladly approve your proposal

that the Government of Hong Kong should

provide the land for the new University,

and I agree that the site which you describe

should be utilized for the purpose.

4. I hope that the community of

Hong Kong will freely respond to the appeal

for funds,

that the Chinese will show

their sense of the advantages which the new

University will give them by contributing

liberally to its endowment, and that the

scheme will be carried to completion as it

has been begun by the aid of private muni-

ficence and public spirit.

You suggest in the closing paragraph of

your despatch that His Majesty's Government

should assist in providing the necessary

funds

carry calls upon the Imperial Exchequer I

fear that I could not with any prospect of

success invite the Lords Commissioners of the

Treasury to ask Parliament for a contribution.
